
Swagata Bhattacharyya (b. 1996, India) is a Kolkata-based visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores speculative architectural imaginaries, urban policy, and modes of governance through drawing, CGI, photography, and video. After completing his BFA in Painting at Rabindra Bharati University (2018) and an MVA from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara (2020), he was awarded the Inlaks Fine Arts Award (2020) and participated in a Khoj International hybrid residency (2021). In 2023, he held a studio residency at Gästeatelier Krone in Aarau, Switzerland.
His first solo exhibition, "Scenes From a Despot’s Dream", was presented at Aicon Contemporary, New York (2022), followed by prominent international screenings and exhibitions such as "Species, Soil and Successors" (Oyoun, Berlin, 2023), and his inclusion in the group presentation “Contains, Cuddles, Exalts, Or Stimulates” at Aicon Contemporary (2025). Swagata creates simulated worlds to critically engage with the invisible infrastructures of power shaping our built environments
