The start of September has many art lovers sprinting across New York City to attend a bounty of art fairs. This weekend, you can take your pick from the Armory Show, Spring Break Art Show, Independent 20th Century, Art on Paper, Clio Art Fair, VOLTA New York and the mini-fair Salon Zürcher. Whether you’re going to one venue or multiple, there’s a lot to navigate in a very limited amount of time — especially if you’ve never been to a fair before.

Standouts in Passages include Shinnecock artist Jeremy Dennis’s layered portrayals of Native American livelihood in Southampton, New York, through Aicon Contemporary, and 18 mixed-media and paper sculptures from Ebony G. Patterson’s ongoing series Studies for a vocabulary of loss through Monique Meloche Gallery.

The irony in Jeremy Dennis’s Open Conflict at Aicon Contemporary is that the conflicts between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are staged to be conspicuous yet their White-presenting subjects barely notice them.
