Marcy Chevali (b.1973, Columbus, Ohio) works primarily in glass and mixed media sculpture. Instead of renouncing the feminine connotations traditionally assigned to craft techniques, Chevali embraces the textile practices once foolishly dismissed. Applying processes from knitting and weaving to lampworking and wire-tying, the artist creates enthralling, biomorphic-shaped glass and wire nets. These illusory grids reinterpret delicacy and fragility as strength. Interested in permeability, Chevali creates boundaries that visually expand and contract.
Chevali has a BFA from Ohio State University, in addition to an MFA from Maine College of Art. The artist has shown her work extensively, including at the Queens Museum of Art and Noyes Museum.
Chevali lives and works in New York City.
